You walk past a vent right as the A/C clicks on and there it is. Damp. Stale. Like a towel that sat in the washer overnight. It fades after a minute, so you tell yourself it’s nothing. Then it’s there again the next time, and the next.
That smell is your house telling you something is staying wet that shouldn’t be. Most of the time it’s a fixable problem in the system. Sometimes it’s mold. Either way, you don’t have to guess.
A homeowner on the West Bank called us this fall with a musty smell coming through the A/C and a dark spot on the guest bedroom ceiling. His HVAC company had already been out. They told him to bring in a mold remediation company before anyone touched the ductwork, because opening up ducts with mold in them can spread it through the house. That’s the right call, and it’s how we got the job. Part of what we found was a drain problem at the unit that was keeping things wet. We could handle the A/C side and the mold side together, with one crew.
Another customer found mold in the upstairs closets. The cause turned out to be an aging A/C system. We fixed it at the source: new ducts, sealed air leaks, a cleaned and insulated attic, and mold remediation in the rooms that were affected. In the review, the customer wrote that we “fixed the problem at its source.” That’s the whole idea.
The drain pan and drain line. Your A/C pulls water out of the air all day. It drips into a pan and runs out a drain line. If the line clogs, the trap is missing, or the pan is rusted through, water sits there in the dark. That’s the most common source we see.
The indoor coil. The coil is cold and wet whenever the system runs, and it catches whatever dust gets past the filter. Wet dust in a dark box is where growth starts.
The ducts. In a hot attic, leaky or poorly insulated ducts sweat. Wet insulation around a duct can hold water for months. A return duct that leaks also pulls in damp attic air and spreads the smell to every room.
The filter. A filter that’s overdue and damp can smell on its own. It’s the cheapest fix and a good place to start.
Somewhere other than the A/C. Sometimes the system is just carrying a smell from a wet wall, a slow plumbing leak, or a closet against an outside wall. The A/C moves the air, so it gets the blame.
Don’t spray anything into the vents or the system, and don’t open up ducts yourself if you think mold is involved. That can spread it.
Call us if the smell comes back after a filter change, if you can see dark spots on vents, ceilings or closet walls, if anyone in the house has asthma or allergies that are acting up, or if the house has had a leak or water in the last year. The longer something stays wet, the bigger the area that has to be cleaned and replaced.
1. Find what’s wet and why. We look at the system, the drain, the pan, the coil, the ducts and the attic, and we take moisture readings and photos. You see what we see.
2. Fix the water first, then the mold. We fix the A/C side, whether that’s the drain, the pan, the ducts or the coil, because mold comes back if the water does. Then, if there’s mold, we do mold remediation: we set up containment so it doesn’t spread to the rest of the house, remove what can’t be cleaned, clean what can, and dry everything out. We’re licensed in Louisiana for both the A/C work and mold remediation, so it’s one team and one plan, not two companies pointing at each other.
3. Prove it’s done. When a mold assessment is required, we order independent, disinterested third-party testing before and after, so the person who says it’s clear isn’t the person who did the work. You get the report and our photos.
The A/C turns on and the air just smells like air. The closet stops smelling. You stop sniffing the vents. And you know what was causing it, what was fixed, and that someone independent confirmed it when that was needed.
Call (504) 702-1480. We answer day or night. If it’s the A/C side, a service visit is $99, waived if you go ahead with the repair. The $147 Clean & Check cleans the inside coil and flushes the drain line and trap, which is where a lot of these smells start.

Is a musty A/C smell dangerous? It means something is staying wet, and mold may be growing. For people with asthma or allergies it can make symptoms worse. It’s worth finding the cause rather than covering it up.
Can I fix it with a vent spray or an air freshener? No. That covers the smell for a day. The water causing it is still there.
Does a musty smell always mean mold? No. A clogged drain line, a dirty coil or a damp filter can all smell musty. Finding the source tells you whether it’s an A/C fix, mold remediation, or both.
Who decides if the mold is gone? When a mold assessment is required, an independent, disinterested third party, not us. We order that testing so the clearance call belongs to someone who didn’t do the work.
